OSO: Medical Outreach—CPR Initiative (1/2) Proposal

Mission Statement: 

Empowering ordinary people to save lives, one class at a time. 

Problem Definition: 

The leading cause of death in Honduras is Coronary heart disease with over 129 deaths per group of 100,000 people, outpacing deaths caused by strokes (90/100,000) and interpersonal violence (80/100,000) (Statista).  

As per International Health Partners, only 0.3 physicians exist for every set of 1,000 Hondurans, revealing a gross disparity in healthcare accessibility. While the larger issues of physician shortage and geographic clinic access are systemic, teaching BLS (Basic Life Saving) and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Hondurans in both rural and urban centers could provide urgent and immediate aid to a country suffering from high quantities of Heart Attacks, Cardiac Arrest, and Heart Failure. 

Short Term Goal: 

By the end of 2027, OSO hopes to have educated three trainers in San Pedro Sula, La Esperancita, and Sula, effectively setting up pilot programs in Rural, Urban, and Suburban areas. Trainers will be supplied with appropriate curriculum and supplies for training BLS/CPR services.

5-Year Goal: 

By the end of 2032, OSO hopes to have 6 educated trainers spread across six areas of service, the following communities are proposed: 

• San Pedro Sula

• La Esperancita

• Sula

• El Nispero

• Nueva Yor 

• Comayagua 

Pilot Communities: 

San Pedro Sula (Boys Home): 

Population- 1,299,000

Medical Access- 0.8 physicians per 1,000 people, access to major medical hubs

Proposed Contact- Selvin 

WHY: Selvin provides care for several young boys, oftentimes walking the streets himself in witness of overdoses and severe drug abuse. Providing BLS/CPR training to Selvin’s boys home could provide pivotal experience to someone in contact with constant medical emergencies.

Sula (CDI Base of Operations):

Population- 2,502 

Medical Access- Small private clinic access (Hospital Sula Socorro de lo Alto)

Proposed Contact- Oscar

WHY: Sula is the future base of operations for CDI, by training Oscar in Sula we set up perhaps the most guaranteed center for sustainability.

El Nispero (Escuela Héctor Ramón Trochez):

Population- 9,700

Medical Access- Centro de Salud de El Níspero

Proposed Contact- Otoniel  

WHY: Otoniel teaches at Escuela Héctor Ramón Trochez and would be able to host larger scale community education events while also having direct contact to other teachers, a priority demographic for BLS/CPR training.

Sustainability Plan: 

Instructors will be required to host a course in intervals of at most 3 months or else materials will be re-possessed by OSO and allocated to a separate training center. Instructors may re-apply for training materials once re-possessed. 

American training teams are only necessary at the beginning of each center’s lifespan; after, responsibility to teach the community falls on the initial trainer and those who complete the course, monthly meetings held with each trainer to ensure effectiveness.

• Liability: Trainers CANNOT claim to certify or otherwise create healthcare providers, trainers must make clear that the course in which they participate is purely educational and provides skills meant to be used in emergency situations, only in the scope of what’s taught in the course. Signatures affirming these principles must be taken before the course begins.
